I think it could be mixed - in the end the author decides what is best for the story. I am not a fan of both but your examples sounded intriguing. Anyways, if I wanted to do this then I would maybe try to escape the stereotypes which have been established so far and think of something different - different mythology, different places and science. (I would do this with anything I would write but still :) ). As everything is different then for example a sci-fi fan will not be disappointed by the fact that there are elves or dwarfs.
It is definitely possible - it depends if you can do it. The project is interesting.
