What I do is to create "composite" main characters that are part me and part someone else.
Then the character can speak for me and (partly) reflect my views.
But I make a conscientious effort to try to "get into the head" of the other person, and have the character reflect the other person's views. This is is easiest when the character is good at something I'm not. For instance, when the character is playing sports s/he will think like some of my more athletic friends rather than yours truly.
