Well! It's easy if you are using Third Person narrative. You can explain about a gesture everytime a character uses it(first few times of course) .
But if it's first person narrative, you need to make the scene very clear to the reader so that they'll understand what the character means by a particular gesture. And It's better if you create your own gestures for your work.
