I am new to writing myself, but, I have been able to write better when I move from one fiction to the other.
For example, when I am writing a 'period drama' and have finished a chapter, sometimes I may not get the right context to start the next chapter. Then I do the background work for my other fiction, which is a 'present day detective story'. Writing that chapter helps refresh my thoughts.
