Well honestly, it all depends on what it is you want. I tend to use both methods, (Plotting half) outlining the most important events that move the story forward and the ending. (Pantsing half) Once thats done I fill in all the little gaps as I go. You could do this since you are just beginning, I do understand your friends advice.
