A friend of mine recommended James N. Freyâ€™s work (How to Write a Damn Good Novel, and so on). I was underwhelmed by those books, but I noticed that Frey frequently cited Lajos Egriâ€™s The Art of Dramatic Writing, which I did find very helpful.

I also recommend John Gardnerâ€™s The Art of Fiction.
