May I just add that aliens does not necessarily have to come from other planets, dimensions, etc.
When the white man first set ashore in South America, the natives saw them as aliens.
The locomotive (as a physical construct) was referred to as an iron horse in victorian times. An alien object.
I also agree with Grahams point, that distinctions between scifi and fantasy is less important.
