The new testament uses time lapse very effectively. Even though this is only twice (jesus as baby, as adolescent, as adult), the fact that this drives a major religion illustrates we have no problem with it.

There are a few major events in any life, and the story of any life will have these few events. It is wired into us that a story that progresses (with time lapse) is natural.
