: Re: Does the protagonist need a name? Does the main character in a short story need a name? My story gives lots of other details about the character.
The fact that you're writing a short story gives you more leniency with this than a novel or a novella.
If you're writing in second person, DO NOT give your protagonist a name! It will be very immersion breaking if you're addressing the reader as the protagonist and then give the protagonist a name that isn't the reader's name.
However, if you're writing it in third person not naming the protagonist will cause you to have to come up with a variety of alternate ways to refer to the protagonist without using their name. That will get awkward and will likely piss off several of your readers.
But, if you're writing in first person, you can probably get away with without naming your protagonist depending on how much they interact with other characters. If there's a lot of interaction with other characters it will get weird if the protagonist's name never comes up.
