AFAIK for each bibtex entry there are required fields (if they are missing you get a warning when compiling with bibtex/latex), and they are specified, for instance, here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BibTeX kmh-lanl.hansonhub.com/spie/bibtex-overview.html
